Miðvikudaginn 8. febrúar heldur Małgorzata Dajnowicz opinberan fyrirlestur sem hún nefnir „Pólsk kvennatímarit á tuttugustu öld“, í stofu 131 í Öskju – náttúrufræðahúsi Háskóla Íslands, kl. 12.00-13.00.

Małgorzata Dajnowicz er prófessor við svið sögulegrar félagsfræði og forseti deildar félags- og stjórnmálahreyfinga við Háskólann í Białystok í Póllandi. Þá er hún forstöðumaður Rannsóknarstofu í kvennafræðum við skólann. Rannsóknir hennar snúa að sögu pólskra kvenna, áhrifum kvenrithöfunda á kynjajafnrétti og sögu yfirstéttar í stjórnmálum á nítjándu og tuttugustu öld.

Í fyrirlestrinum fjallar Dajnowicz um mest lesnu kvennatímaritin sem gefin voru út í Póllandi á árunum 1945-1989, eins og Kona og líf (Kobieta i Życie). Tímaritin voru víðlesin og markhópurinn menntakonur sem bjuggu í borgum. Þegar útgáfa tímaritanna hófst, í lok fjórða áratugarins og í upphafi þess fimmta, boðuðu þau kommúníska hugmyndafræði. Á áttunda áratugnum aðlöguðust pólsku tímaritin breytingum á kynhlutverkum kvenna og fyrirmyndirnar sem þau birtu leituðust við að standa jafnfætis karlmönnum á ýmsum sviðum samfélagsins.

Þessar breytingar opnuðu á nýjar leiðir við að skilgreina kynhlutverk og höfðu mikil áhrif á þær kvenímyndir sem settar eru fram í tímaritum sem markaðssett eru fyrir konur sérstaklega. Á sama tíma jókst einnig umfjöllun um stjórnmál og félagsleg málefni í tímaritunum. Á kommúnistatímanum voru fjölmiðlar peð í höndum ríkisstjórnarinnar og tilgangur fjölmiðlaumfjöllunar var að breiða út stefnu stjórnvalda og styðja við hið sósíalíska ríki.

Polish women’s magazines in the twentieth century

Wednesday, 8 February, Małgorzata Dajnowicz will give a public talk titled „Polish women’s magazines in the twentieth century“, in room 131 in Askja – the building of Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland, at 12.00-13.00.

Małgorzata Dajnowicz is a Professor at the Department of Historical Sociology and head of Faculty of Social and Political Movements at the University of Białystok in Poland. She is also President of the Institute of Women’s Studies. Her research interests include: history of Polish women, women writers’ influence on gender equality and history of political elites in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The aim of Dajnowicz presentation is to discuss the most widely read women’s magazines released in Poland in 1945–1989, such as Kobieta i Życie (e. Woman and Life). The magazines were high-circulation women’s periodicals targeted at educated women living in cities. As the launch of the titles took place at the end of the 40s and the beginning of 50s, just after the II World War, the magazines represented communist ideology.

In the 70s Polish magazines became more responsive to the changes in female gender roles and started promoting new types of female roles, trying to catch up with men in different fields of social life. This change opened new doors in the ongoing process of defining gender roles and largely influenced the image of a woman presented in magazines marketed explicitly to female readers. The magazines published more articles with political and social themes.

Under communism, the press in Poland was simply a “pawn” of the government and media coverage served as its instrument to transmit social policy and contribute to the socialist state.
