Dagana 4.-6. júní verður haldin alþjóðleg ráðstefna í Háskóla Íslands um karla og karlmennskurannsóknir undir yfirskriftinni Emerging ideas in masculinity research – Masculinity studies in the North. Ráðstefnan er samstarfsverkefni Norrænu ráðherranefndarinnar á formennskuári Íslands og norræns netverks um karla og karlmennskurannsóknir en þetta er þriðja ráðstefnan í þessu samstarfi.

Aðrir samstarfsaðilar ráðstefnunnar eru Jafnréttisstofa, MARK – Miðstöð margbreytileika- og kynjarannsókna, RIKK – Rannsóknastofnun í jafnréttisfræðum við Háskóla Íslands, ásamt Jafnréttisnefnd Háskóla Íslands.

Lykilfyrirlesarar eru að þessu sinni tveir heimsfrægir brautryðjendur á sviði karlarannsókna en það eru þau Raewyn Connell, prófessor við Sidney Háskóla í Ástralíu og Michael Kimmel, prófessor við Stony Brook Háskóla í New York. Fjölmargir innlendir og erlendir fræðimenn munu taka þátt í ráðstefnunni og koma þeir frá fjórum heimsálfum. Efnistökin eru fjölbreytt en ráðstefnan samanstendur af 35 málstofum og yfir 140 erindum. Fjallað verður um birtingamyndir karlmennskunnar, unga menn, karlmannslíkamann, feður og föðurhlutverkið, heilsu, listir, samræmingu fjölskyldu- og atvinnulífs, ofbeldi, hlutverk karla í jafnréttisbaráttunni, karla í mannkynssögunni og fötlun svo eitthvað sé nefnt.

International conference on men and masculinity studies

On 4-6 June, an international conference on masculinities studies entitled Emerging ideas in masculinity research – Masculinity studies in the North, will be held at the University of Iceland. The conference is a collaboration between the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Association for Research on Men and Masculinities, and is the third conference stemming from this cooperation.

Other collaborators are the Ministry of Welfare, Centre for Gender Equality in Iceland, MARK (Centre for diversity- and gender research), RIKK (Institute for Gender, Equality and Difference), and the Equal Rights Committee at the University of Iceland.

The two keynote speakers are both world-famous scholars and pioneers in the field of men’s studies: Raewyn Connell, Professor of Sidney University in Australia, and Michael Kimmel, Professor at Stony Brook University in New York. Numerous local and international scholars will participate in the conference coming from four continents and deploy diverse approaches in their work. The conference will include 35 workshops with over 140 interventions. Various manifestations of masculinity will be discussed, including young men, the male body, fathers and fatherhood, health, arts and literature, coordination of family and work, violence, the role of men in gender equality, men in history, and disability to name a few.
