Do Women Face Bias in Academic Science Careers?

On Wednesday 7 September, the School of Health Sciences and the Centre for Women‘s and Gender Research at the University of Iceland will host a symposium titled „Do Women Face Bias in Academic Science Careers?“ The symposium will take place at the National Museum at 2-4pm.

The symposium is held on the occasion of Dr. Molly Carnes’ visit to Iceland but she has worked extensively to increase the participation and advancement of women in academic medicine, science, and engineering. Speakers will discuss if and how women still face biases within the academic science community and how it is possible to fulfil the potential of women within the sciences. A large body of research shows the existence of cognitive distortions in the way we „see“ men and women’s work, but strategies have also been developed to counter these. Speakers will further discuss these issues in the context of the University of Iceland, focusing on hiring processes for academic positions as well as the experiences of students within academic departments.

Programme:

Chair: Kristín Vala Ragnarsdóttir, Dean of the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland

14.10 – 14.40
Molly Carnes, Professor of Medicine, Psychiatry, and Industrial & Systems Engineering at UW-Madison
